Half-Round vs. K-Style Gutters: Which Is Right for Your Home?
The two most popular gutter profiles look very different on a home โ and they perform differently too. Here's how to choose between half-round and K-style.
When it's time for new gutters, most homeowners end up choosing between two classic profiles: half-round and K-style. Both do the same job โ moving water off your roof and away from your foundation โ but they look, install, and age very differently.
Half-Round: The Classic Choice
Half-round gutters are exactly what they sound like โ a smooth, open semicircle. They've been used on fine homes for centuries and remain the go-to profile for historic restorations, Mediterranean and European-style architecture, and any project where copper is the material of choice.
Because the trough is smooth with no inside corners, half-round gutters shed debris more easily and are simpler to clean. Paired with round downspouts, they create an elegant, traditional look that only improves as copper develops its patina.
K-Style: The Modern Workhorse
K-style gutters have a flat back and a decorative front that resembles crown molding. They hold more water than a half-round of the same width, mount flush against fascia boards, and pair naturally with rectangular downspouts.
For contemporary homes and high-volume roof areas โ especially in South Florida's heavy summer downpours โ K-style is often the practical pick. It's available in copper, aluminum, and Kynar-coated steel.
How to Decide
A few quick rules of thumb from 25+ years of installations:
- โขHistoric or high-end architectural home โ half-round copper
- โขMaximum water capacity on a budget โ 6-inch K-style aluminum
- โขSalt air and coastal exposure โ copper or thick-gauge aluminum, never bare steel
- โขWant it to last a lifetime โ copper in either profile, soldered joints
